Azteca

Azteca was illegally dumped here in May 2023, along with two other roosters, Mario and our late Gallardo. The three of them were left in Paddock Paradise, where the cows and donkeys live. Azteca and Gallardo were left free-ranging, while Mario was confined to a carrier with an attached handwritten note from their previous caregiver.
Their unexpected arrival created a challenge for the sanctuary, as we didn’t yet have secure, predator-proof enclosures or proper coops ready for them. We initially considered rehoming them, but based on our experience, we know how difficult and unsafe that can be for roosters. Many people who raise chickens for human use aren’t zoned for roosters or lack the proper resources and space to allow them to thrive, especially when it comes to housing multiple roosters safely.
Despite the strain on our resources, we were determined to make it work. We first attempted to create an “all-rooster flock” by housing Azteca with Gallardo and Mario, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. We did our best and ultimately had to separate them for their safety.
The handwritten note left behind included their names, which we’ve kept, along with some general information about each of them.
When Azteca first arrived, a vet exam revealed several raw, open wounds on the bottoms of his feet, likely caused by standing in excrement for prolonged periods. His feathers were ruffled, and his comb was marked with sores and scabs. But after being treated to a nutritious diet, given ample space and enrichment, and receiving several rounds of medicated foot soaks (in which he stood patiently for minutes at a time), he began to recover beautifully. His improved feathers, comb, and impressive size are a testament to how far he’s come.
Azteca is now the largest rooster at FOTF, and also one of the sweetest, a true gentle giant. He currently lives with Emily, a kind hen who has struggled to fit into other flocks. Azteca has taken it upon himself to look after her, keeping a watchful eye for any danger and even foraging and sharing the treats he finds. He loves sunbathing, dust bathing, and each night, he lets Emily take the top roost in their coop.
Thanks to our supporters, we’re so grateful we are able to give Azteca and the other roosters a safe and peaceful home where they can thrive, free from exploitation.
