Ember

Updated: Mar 24

Ember was rescued in September 2019, along with two other hens, from a cockfighting operation. One of our volunteers, Julie H., was able to convince the owners to surrender the three hens to FOTF.

This breed of hen is commonly exploited for breeding more cockfighting roosters, for their eggs, and for their flesh. Thankfully, because Ember was born female, she wasn’t forced into fighting, but she does carry the same spirited energy and toughness these birds are known for.

She was named by Julia T, a friend and past volunteer of the sanctuary.

Ember is a beautiful blend of cautious and curious. Sometimes she chooses to explore on her own, scavenging for treats and enjoying solo adventures. Other times, you’ll find her with the flock, doing what every chicken should have the chance to do: scratching, foraging, dust bathing, and sunning herself in safety.

She usually roosts beside her closest companion, Ruby, at night, all within a fully predator-proofed space.

Thanks to our community’s unwavering support, Ember has the freedom and peace she was always meant to have, a life far from fear, filled with respect and care.
