Reflecting on 2025: A Year of Care, Community, and Accountability

As we close out 2025, all of us at Farm of the Free would like to express our deepest gratitude to you. Your continued support made this a defining year for Farm of the Free Animal Sanctuary, one rooted in accountability, community, and the highest standards of care for the animals who call this place home.

A Major Milestone: GFAS Accreditation

This year marked a major milestone for our organization as Farm of the Free achieved accreditation from the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS). GFAS accreditation is an internationally recognized distinction that evaluates sanctuaries on animal care, ethics, governance, transparency, and long-term sustainability. Only a small number of sanctuaries meet these rigorous standards.

For our supporters, this accreditation builds trust and confidence that their generosity directly supports ethical, transparent, and compassionate sanctuary operations.

For our residents, it ensures their lives are protected by the highest standards in the field. This milestone strengthens our foundation and positions Farm of the Free to continue growing thoughtfully, guided by care, accountability, and community.

Welcoming Hank & Expanding Our Care

2025 welcomed a new resident and species to the sanctuary, Hank, a three-year-old kunekune pig! Hank’s arrival represents an expansion of our sanctuary and a commitment to offering care to animals who are often overlooked.

Supporters like you rallied to fund a dedicated pig shelter, now nearing completion, named Porcus Palatium, which was intentionally built to accommodate Hank and up to three future pig rescues.

This project was made possible in large part by the generosity of an angel donor, whose support ensured the home could be built quickly and with the future in mind.

Looking Ahead: Capital Improvements for 2026

Hank’s home is just one piece of a broader vision. Looking ahead to 2026, Farm of the Free has identified eight capital improvement projects that will strengthen daily operations, improve animal comfort, and make the sanctuary more accessible and welcoming for visitors.

These projects reflect our commitment to long-term sustainability and responsible growth, ensuring that, as our community expands, our infrastructure grows intentionally.

Honoring Those We Lost

This year, we also pause to honor the lives of several beloved residents who passed away:

  • Supreme and Gallardo, two roosters whose presence brought rhythm, confidence, and protection to their flocks

  • Stevie Ray, a hen remembered for her bold, pecky personality

  • Buddha, whose big personality, zippy energy, and unmistakable bark left a lasting impression on everyone he met

Each of these animals was cared for with compassion, veterinary support, and deep respect throughout their lives. Their time at Farm of the Free reflects our unwavering commitment to dignity, comfort, and love, values that guide our work every single day.

From all of us at Farm of the Free Animal Sanctuary: thank you for being part of this journey. Your belief in this work makes everything possible, and we are deeply grateful to move into the future together.
