Phoenix was rescued by FOTF in October 2020 after surviving a heartbreaking situation. She had been bought as a chick to become a backyard hen, but she and her flockmates were given no protection from predators. Tragically, she was the only surviving chicken when we learned of her case.
Due to domestication and selective breeding, chickens no longer retain the strong wild instincts of their ancestors and are particularly vulnerable to predators, especially at night when they cannot see well. Without proper shelter, they are defenseless.
Phoenix was beautifully named by one of our former volunteers and a talented musician, @cassandramaylorance.
Despite witnessing the loss of every member of her previous flock night after night to predators, Phoenix remains one of the sweetest, friendliest, and most curious hens we’ve ever met. She’s incredibly welcoming to new flock mates and forms bonds easily. When she first arrived, she appeared ragged and possibly malnourished, but within six months at FOTF, she filled out and now has the most stunning black feathers with iridescent shine. Her inner and outer beauty shine equally bright.
Since coming to the sanctuary, Phoenix has blossomed. She spends her days digging and pecking in the dirt, lounging under the sun, and fluffing around in dust, all within a predator-proof space shared with her flock
mates.
The generosity of our supporters makes it possible for Phoenix and her companions to live in peace, surrounded by care and completely free from the cycle of harm.
