Radtkey is one of six chicken siblings who arrived at FOTF as young chicks in June 2017, along with their late mother, Cluckie. At the time, the group was roaming freely across the property without a secure coop or protection from common predators like coyotes, foxes, and raccoons. Today, Radtkey and the remaining members of that original rescue, siblings, Dave and Iris West, are the longest-standing residents of FOTF’s chicken community.
Radtkey was named by one of our youngest supporters, Mason, and his mother, Katye, in honor of his late favorite cousin.
He has been with us since FOTF’s first year and has consistently shown himself to be a true gentleman, kind, thoughtful, and deeply committed to protecting his flock. Radtkey has made it his life’s mission to be their loyal sentinel.
A few years back, he unfortunately broke a toe, which required a partial amputation. Thankfully, he made a full recovery without developing a limp and continues to confidently patrol his enclosure without issue. He’s also one of the more curious chickens and is often the first to greet visitors. You can often find him enjoying the simple pleasures all roosters deserve, scratching and pecking at the earth, searching for treats to share with the ladies, basking in the sun, and dust bathing, by within a secure, predator-proof space alongside his flock family.
What’s especially moving is the bond he shares with his sister, Iris West, a connection that has remained unbroken since the day they were born. Even more extraordinary is that, for a time, they were surrounded by the love of their late mother, Cluckie, and sister, Beauty. In a world where most animals born into agriculture are torn from their families and never given the chance to truly live, their time together is nothing short of a miracle. These are the sacred gifts of sanctuary life, rare moments where love, safety, respect, and freedom are allowed to coexist.
Thanks to our amazing supporters, Radtkey and his flock were not only rescued but are living out their lives in a secure, enriching, and loving environment, where exploitation will never be a part of their story.
