Emily

Updated: Mar 24

Emily was rescued in September 2019 along with two other hens. They were born into a cockfighting ring, and one of our incredible volunteers, Julie H., was able to convince the owners to surrender three of them to FOTF. This breed of hen is often used to breed more fighting roosters, for their eggs and for their flesh. Fortunately, because Emily was born female, she was spared from being forced into the fights themselves. Still, she carries a bit more energy and feistiness than the average hen!

Emily was named after one of our strongest, most consistent, and dedicated volunteers at the time.

She is shy, yet deeply resilient. We’ve tried introducing her to several flocks over the years, but sadly, she’s been picked on in every one. Thankfully, she now lives peacefully with Azteca, who has taken on the role of her protector and companion. Emily enjoys foraging around her enclosure, searching for blueberries, figs, and other tasty treats, with Azteca never far behind. They dust bathe and sunbathe together, and at night, Azteca always gives her the top roost.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Emily and her flock mate get to forever enjoy a life filled with freedom, safety, enrichment, and dignity.
