Philly

Updated: Mar 24

Philly, the rooster of his flock, was abandoned at FOTF with his flock mates as baby chicks shortly after Easter in 2022. This unexpected act placed a strain on the sanctuary, as we had no additional predator-proof enclosures or a proper coop available for them.

Thankfully, we launched a fundraiser to address the need. In the meantime, a wonderful volunteer, Julia and her mother Anne, lovingly cared for the chicks at their home until a proper home for the chickens was ready.

Philly received his name from Matthew H. and his family, longtime supporters of FOTF.

Now a fully grown an

d strong rooster, Philly takes his role as protector of his four hen companions very seriously. He closely follows anyone who enters their enclosure to ensure his flock is safe. He’s a brave and handsome soul with a heart of gold, sharing treats he finds, sounding alarms when he senses danger, and enjoying sunbathing and dust bathing.

It’s worth mentioning that there’s something quietly powerful about the way he and his flock mates have remained side by side from the moment they arrived at FOTF. In a world where so many animals are stripped of even the simplest connection, like the chance to grow up with their families or friends, their story stands as a rare and beautiful exception. In a sanctuary setting, moments like these aren’t accidents. They are fiercely protected, made possible through intention, and honored as sacred. Because every life deserves not only safety, but a place to belong, be respected, and live freely without any expectations.
