Leena

Updated: Mar 24

Leena was rescued in September 2019, along with two other hens. They were born into a cockfighting ring, and one of our incredible volunteers, Julie H., was able to convince the owners to surrender all three to us. This breed of hen is typically used to breed more cockfighting roosters and is also exploited for their eggs and flesh. Thankfully, because Leena was born female, she wasn’t forced into fighting, but she does tend to have more energy and feistiness than your average hen!

She was named by a friend of FOTF and former Board Vice President, Michel K.

Leena is the most strong-willed of all the hens here at FOTF. She’s extremely expressive and always makes her presence known. During snack time, she’s usually the one clucking persistently until she gets her treat! Other chickens tend to move out of her way as she makes her rounds in the enclosure. Due to her tough, no-nonsense personality, we’ve had to try placing her in a few different flocks to find the best fit. She was doing well living with a large and gentle rooster, Gallardo, until his sudden passing in early July 2025. Thankfully, Leena’s independent nature has helped her adapt, but we’re still hoping to find a new flock mate who can match her energy!

Thanks to the continued support from our community, we’ve been able to create a safe haven where Leena can live in peace, free from harm and human exploitation.
