Waylon is an Angus cow, and was rescued from an auction for the veal industry by a passionate animal lover, then ended up here at his forever home. The "veal product" is the male offspring of dairy cows. In other words, veal is a byproduct of the dairy industry. The baby calves are kept in tiny crates before being slaughtered at around 4 months old.
Waylon arrived at Farm of the Free around the same time we rescued Cash, and the two became friends quickly. Sadly, Cash passed away in February of 2024, and it was clear Waylon mourned his friend and missed the companionship.
We were happy to be contacted by a vegan advocacy group at the end of 2024 about adopting four Angus cows, Wilson, Daisy, Dani, and Phoenix (Dani’s baby).
Waylon, though large and majestic, is gentle and laid-back, often taking the lead in the pasture, especially since the arrival of the other four cows, with whom he quickly formed bonds.
Waylon is used to humans and will usually approach, because it's no secret that he adores getting back scratches from the small rakes we use. He will get quite jealous if he sees someone else getting more scratches than him, and if you see him start to drool, that means you've hit the sweet spot! 🐮
